Update 0.2.0 UX Fixes + UI Overhauls

It's been a couple weeks and we have already gotten lots of great feedback! Please keep it coming! Seriously, thank you. It's super helpful seeing what's working and what's causing you to rage quit. This update hits a bunch of the biggest paint points that have been brought up.

Inputs and Settings
A major theme in your feedback: the game really wanted you to use a controller, even if you didn't want to. Leading to a lot of confusion, and frustration, that is now fixed. Here are the hilites:

  • The new game splash screen is gone!
  • Input icons now switch automatically based on what you’re using. No need to change anything unless you want PS-style glyphs or prefer static icons.
  • You can now access Settings from the Pause menu, so you don’t lose progress just to adjust gamma or select the right controller.
  • The Input menu now clearly notes that glyph changes are handled under Graphics.

The Tutorial

A common complaint was not being able to skip the tutorial. That's fixed too, and ways to skip the tutorial are given more visibility.

  • You can now talk to Master Runchu anytime during the tutorial to mark it complete.
  • Or, if you’d rather not start it at all, Puddin still offers...  other options. You can outsmart or strong-arm your way out (though violence may have consequences).
  • Runchu now drops hints about Puddin's options since you might be new to the game when pressing 'New Game'.

The UI

We’ve overhauled the UI to make it clearer and easier to read:

  • Larger lives counter, item icons, and special indicators. No more squinting to see numbers during battles.
  • Item icons now have cleaner, high-contrast visuals with less clutter and no tiny text.

Old UI

New UI

The Font
We've migrated most text to a newer font, WinkySans. Which is considerably easier to read than the NES style font. Some things, like numbers will continue to use the old font, but complicated text will not.

Mac and Web Builds

A lot of people have reported issues on Mac, especially when using Firefox , and even Chrome had some visual bugs on certain systems. Some Windows users noticed audio weirdness too. A lot of this comes down to running the game in WebAssembly, so we’ve added downloadable builds!

  • Mac support is limited to WebAssembly for now and we strongly suggest running in Chrome. We are continuing to explore ways to provide better support.
  • Windows and Linux will now have executables available, players using these should see a solid performance boost.

Bonus Updates
All the other changes you might notice.

  • Drop shadow added for airborne characters.
  • Improvements to fullscreen and window resizing.

So What's Next?!

Soon we are going to be starting on our next content push, so we will be working on the next apartment and the first tenant whose signature you will need to collect. And we want your help! We have a few ideas, but which one do you want to see?

  • A human tenant lives as a king with mice serving as his appliances bringing misery to the local tribe. The Chosen One must find a way to end the barbarism while still getting a signature.
  • A young girl is being plagued by night terrors, and the ant's remedies aren't working. The Chosen One's only chance of getting her mother's signature depends on the local Shaman's plan that will have him facing off against actual nightmares.

We'll be having polls, posting updates, and looking for more ideas in our Discord. So join us there if you'd like to participate. Sign My Petition Discord
